Summer courses
Modeling with HEC-RAS,7-11 June Prof. J. L. Martin, Mississippi State Univ, USA & Dr. R. Walton Westconsultants, USA
The aim of this course is to provide an overview of the main concepts and practical issues related to the numerical modeling and analysis river hydrodynamics and water quality. HEC-RAS (river analysis system) is a 1- dimensional integrated river modeling software system develop by U.S. Army Corp Of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering System (HEC). It can be used for steady flow analyses, unsteady flow calculations, sediment transport simulation and water quality analyses as well as dam-break and flood analyses bridge analyses and other engineering such as channel design. On the theoretical component, the basic modeling concepts will be presented as well as the assumptions and limitations regarding to HEC-RAS. In terms of the practical component, the objective is to develop the skills on using numerical models to study physics and water quality in river systems as well as effects of the water resources engineering operations on those processes. There will be intensive hands on training during the course.
Environmental risk assessment, 21-25 June Prof.A. Marcomini, and Dr. S.Gottardo, University Ca’ Foscari of Venice, Italy.
The aim of this course is to overview the main Environmental Risk Assessment approaches, experiences and information sources, by means of dedicated models for human health and ecological risk analysis. The course will have a theoretical and a practical component which will be closely interconnected. As regards the theoretical component, the Environmental Risk Assessment standard procedures developed at international level will be discussed, including: Human Health Risk Assessment, Ecological Risk Assessment, Screening and Site-specific risk assessment, and Spatial and Regional Risk Assessment. The second part concerns the application of specific models for human health and ecological risk analysis, used by Local and National Authorities and consultancy firms.
